2024 Legislative Session Wrap Up

The 2024 Utah Legislative Session ended at 12:00 A.M. Saturday March 2nd. Our union had our legislative lobbying team at the Capitol every day of the session. We supported bills that benefitted employees. We fought against legislation that would take away employee rights and shared governance. Overall, we did well! HB 285 and HB 429 were defeated which means that public sector unions will remain at our worksites and public employees will not become "At Will" and lose their career status rights.

Make no mistake, there are national groups that are completely focused on taking away our rights as employees to collective bargain for our contracts and have due process at our worksites. Utah is one of the few states who defeated these bills. The only defense we have is to organize and unionize as workers in order to protect our rights. Anti-public employee groups will be doubling their efforts to bring back these bills next year and we need to organize now to prepare for this fight. Please encourage your colleagues to join AFT Utah College Council Local 4738. Membership in the union also includes membership in the AAUP. We need to increase our membership and elect union leaders in order to protect our union and employees. Please encourage your colleagues to join the union and share this email and information including the online union application link below.
